Who We Are
Somali American Healthcare Foundation (SOMCare) is a Not For Profit Organization that is devoted to bringing life saving medical care to the most vulnerable people and medically challenging cases in Somalia.
SOMCare began its work in 2006 with the heart touching incident of a 7-year-old Somali girl that raped and left both physically and psychologically devastated and with no access to medical care. Abdi Maahaay (Founder and Executive Director of SOMCare) and his wife Sahra were touched by this news; they immediately took action by contacting people and organizations around Minnesota. Mayo Clinic and University of Minnesota took the initiative to sponsor Muraya and provide immediate medical and psychosocial support needed to rebuild Muraya's precious life.
Since then, SOMCare through its volunteer medical staff have provided care to over 174 people, performed dozens of high risk surgeries including separation of conjoined twins, removal large tumors, cleft palates lifts, hydrocephalus shunts, and congenital heart defect repairs, bladder repairs, fistula repairs.
SOMCare works to assemble international medical providers from United States, Canada and Europe and bring them to Somalia’s neighboring countries in which they receive needing care in neighboring countries. In some cases, SOMCare works with its supporters to bring complex medical cases to the U.S. In addition to providing life saving medical care, SOMCare sends medical doctors, food and medical donations and played a huge part in responding to the needs of refugees impacted by famine in Somalia in 2010.
SOMCare and its dedicated leadership, continues to provide motivation to save others lives by inspiring local and international community members. Since 2006 to present SOMCare has been an organization dedicated to give others a smile to a life they never imaged. It has helped infants, children, teens and adults from minor Deformaties to severe deformities.
SOMCare is headquartered in Rochester, Minnesota with operating capacity in Europe, Canada, Kenya, and Somalia. SOMCare’s leader, Mr. Maahaay has earned local and international recognition; was named the person of the year in 2007 on Hiiraan Online and received Human Rights Award in 2003 in Olmsted County Rochester, Minnesota.

For the last seven years SOMCare has provided care to countless of refugees in Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia. SOMCare relies on the donated funds from local and international community and without these vital supports from the Somali diaspora and friends of the Somali people, SOMCARE would not be able to deliver these medical miracles that allow children like Muraya to get a chance to live a life free of pain. SOMCare has successfully fundraised across Canada, U.S and Europe.
SOMCare has established strong partnerships with the University of Minnesota and the Mayo Clinic and are currently working on taking volunteer doctors to Somalia early February 2014. The medical team travels with their equipment and medical supplies needed to perform these surgeries.
